Suffering from droopy eyelids or blepharoptosis? Finally, there is a solution, and it is not science fiction. It is a one-of-a-kind non-surgical treatment for eyelid ptosis (sagging) that creates an option you will love. If you are not ready for eyelid surgery and are suffering from low-lying eyelids due to inflammation, or age, Upneeq is your answer.

What is Blepharoptosis or Droopy Eyelids?

The medical name for drooping eyelids is blepharoptosis, and eyelids that droop may make you appear tired and your eyes look smaller than they really are. Blepharoptosis can also interfere with the function of your eyes.

There are many causes of droopy eyelids, including aging, genetics, eye surgery, and certain medical conditions that inadvertently travel to the eyelid muscles after an infection.

Droopy eyelids can also be congenital or present from birth. Congenital droopy eyelids cannot be treated with Upneeq; congenital drooping eyelids are a muscle problem. However, acquired blepharoptosis can be effectively treated with Upneeq.

A Second Option for Droopy Eyelids

Upneeq is a revolutionary and FDA-approved option for droopy eyelids. It is also the first treatment approved by the FDA to treat acquired droopy eyelids for cosmetic purposes.

Upneeq is an eye drop scientifically called oxymetazoline hydrochloride ophthalmic solution placed in the eye once a day. The ingredients in Upneeq trigger the Muller’s muscles (levator palpebrae muscle), which is the culprit causing the muscle to contract. Upneeq stimulates an involuntary eyelid muscle to contract.

In clinical studies, Upneeq lifted the upper eyelid lift by 1 mm. This amount of lift sounds minimal and will not give you the dramatic results possible with surgery. However, this small lift may be cosmetically and medically beneficial to many patients.

Each drop of Upneeq was proven effective for at least six hours in a clinical setting. It is also very safe and effective for treating acquired eyelid ptosis in adults. To gain FDA approval, Upneeq needed to show effectiveness in two six-week trials that followed over 304 patients with acquired blepharoptosis. In a third study, it was also proven that Upneeq is very safe.

The main ingredient in Upneeq, oxymetazoline hydrochloride, is surprisingly the same in decongestant nasal sprays. In nasal sprays, the ingredients stimulate the blood vessels to contract and stop sneezing and congestion. In Upneeq, this ingredient stimulates eyelid muscle contraction.

What are the side effects?

Side effects in clinical trials were seen in about 1-5% of patients and included eye inflammation or irritation, redness, dry eye, blurred vision, headache, redness in the lining, and inflammation of the cornea. Eye pain is also possible but not verified.

You can experience side effects of rebound redness or rebound hyperemia, but that also occurs using certain eye drops like Visine or other over-the-counter products that relieve redness by constricting blood vessels. Rebound redness is a persistent redness that develops after your eyes become accustomed to any redness-relieving eye drop. Upneeq is not prescribed for redness relief, so this side effect is rare.

You can use Upneeq with other eye drops. Be safe for 15 minutes before using any other eye drops or inserting contact lenses. You can only use Upneeq once a day.

Who are Good Candidates for Upneeq?

For those with mild, moderate, or severe eyelid sagging or ptosis and who do not take medications that interfere with Upneeq, you are a good candidate for the medication. However, do note that Upneeq may affect some patients’ blood pressure and amine metabolism. Therefore, you must avoid Upneeq if you take beta blockers, anti-hypertensive medication, or cardiac glycosides.
